My Remarks to local Councils on Supporting the TransformWR Climate Action Strategy and a 50% by 2030 Target

On May 31st I spoke to the City of Waterloo Council in support of TransformWR and 50x30 emission reductions. TransformWR is the result of years of consultation and technical review. The community and city staff have done their jobs well: they’ve prepared a plan rooted in local actions that, taken together, would transform our community for the better.

My Remarks to Regional Council on Eliminating Election Signs On Regional Property

On May 19th I spoke to regional council in support of a motion that will explore the elimination of election sign placement on regional property, a practice that is wasteful, unfair and seems widely disliked in the community.

My Remarks at Regional Council on the 2021 Waterloo Regional Police Service Budget

While necessary changes are not limited to police, this is where we have been told that action must urgently begin. While not the fault of any one person, we must recognize that the systems around us – including that of policing – were designed in a way that privileges our whiteness and upholds white supremacy. We must recognize that those in the formal positions of authority are not those with the most at stake. And, with this recognition, we must move past talk of reform and listen to the calls for action being put forward by those who do have the most on the line — Black and Indigenous people in our community.

–––

My Remarks at City of Kitchener Council on Phasing Out Gas-Fired Electricity Generation

“A theme that I’m increasingly proud of this Council for, is that you are finding constructive ways to engage in big challenges.

Over a decade ago I was in front of Council sharing our community’s first climate change action plan. At that time, you unanimously supported both the plan and our community’s first climate target: climate change wasn’t seen as ‘too big of a problem’ to engage in. Similarly, last week, anti-Black racism and Indigenous reconciliation weren’t seen as ‘too big of a problem’ to engage in.

Instead, you’ve recognized the City has a critical role to play in these larger challenges, and I’m glad for that. This is the case again tonight, and why I’m here to speak in support of Councillor Chapman’s motion.”

———

Last night the City of Kitchener Council met to review a motion to urge the province of Ontario to shut down natural gas generating stations . This is a transcript of what I said in support of the motion.

My Remarks at the Region of Waterloo's Anti-Black Racism Town Hall

“While necessary changes are not limited to police, this is where we are being told action must urgently begin. It’s past time Council and the Police Services Board listen to these calls.”

Tonight our community had a town hall on systemic racism. I spoke at this event, and here’s a transcript of what I said.
